During each quarter of the year, Sereno Group’s Coastal Offices in Santa Cruz and Aptos choose two recipients to receive a grant from Sereno’s 1% for Good Charitable Foundation. Each agent has the opportunity to donate 1% of their commissions to the 1% for Good Program which means that it is 100% agent funded. Since 2012, Sereno agents across the Bay Area have donated over $2,148,723 to local organizations!

It’s hard to believe we are already into the third quarter of 2019! The first recipient for the third quarter of 2019 is the Extra-Mile Fund by the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter.

peanut the dog in recoveryThe Extra-Mile Fund was created for the animals with the greatest needs. Here is the story of a dog named Peanut, who came into the shelter with impact wounds on his face and a broken jaw. His injuries required X-rays, surgery, antibiotics, and pain medication, all very costly procedures. Peanut is now happy and healthy and has been adopted into a new home. If it wasn't for the Extra-Mile fund, Peanut’s story may have ended differently. The Extra-Mile Fund gives animals, like Peanut, who need extensive care, the opportunity to live. Peanut’s story is just one of the many, happy endings that have been possible because of the Extra-Mile Fund.

Get Involved

With limited government funding, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter relies on volunteers, donors and the community to help in countless ways throughout their organization. Here are the ways you can get involved and help support their mission.

One of the biggest ways to support the shelter is to volunteer. Volunteers are a crucial part of their organization and help in various roles. From walking dogs, helping with adoption shows, grooming or giving tours, there are countless ways to lend your time and skills. For a full list of volunteer positions, click here.

Fostering is a major part of the shelter system. Foster homes allow young, elderly, sick, abused, under-socialized, and injured animals a stable and loving environment for them to grow or heal before they are adopted. It also allows for animals who can’t handle the stress of the shelter a comforting place to live before being adopted, which in turn allows more room in the shelter, so no animal is turned away. Learn more about fostering here.

Private monetary gifts are what make the above-and-beyond work of the shelter possible. While the shelter is government funded, it is the private giving of others that fund community outreach, medical care, education, prevention, and training programs. Item donations for animals are also accepted and always appreciated. Those items can include collars, leashes, blankets, toys, and treats. Click here for a full list of ways to donate.

Recently completed, the new Benefit Shop is the perfect place to hunt for unique items while feeling good about where you’re spending your money. 100% of the proceeds go directly to the shelter to help animals in Santa Cruz County. The Benefit Shop also accepts item donations, find more details here.

History on the 1% for Good Program

The 1% for Good program originated in the Santa Cruz Sereno Group office out of a desire to help contribute to worthwhile community causes through philanthropic donations. The program has since extended to other Sereno Group branches and offices in the Bay Area, resulting in a joint effort to support and contribute to local communities. Each office independently decides which local organization they will donate 1% of quarterly commissions to, allowing them to find a worthy local cause and donate where it’s needed the most.
